Question:
I am hoping you will have some information about a bowl I have. It appears to be a very early Red Wing Stoneware Co. brown crockery glazed bowl. The entire bowl is glazed crock brown with an unglazed rim & edge under the band as shown. It is 7 1/2" across at the top, 4" high. There is a pontil mark in the centre inside of bowl. Glazed bottom rim has 3 indentations. It is in great shape except for one small chip on the bottom as shown in the picture. The only mark is RWSCo hand etched into the bottom under the glaze. I have searched the web for years and never found one quite like it. Thanks for your help!

Answer: You have a Red Wing Stoneware Milk Pan. These Milk Pans appeared in every stoneware catalog Red Wing ever published. The Minnesota Stoneware Company also produced these bowls, which tells us they began manufacturing these bowls before 1906 (before the union of the Red Wing Stoneware & Minnesota Stoneware Companies). They were produced well into the 1930′s and came in sizes from 4 3/4" to 15 1/2". the 7" to 10" bowls are the most easiest to find. In mint condition, your 7" bowl would have a value between $45 to $60. With your chip on the bottom, the value would be reduced. Al Kohlman
