Question:
Hello Collectors, could you please tell me anything about this piece? I would appreciate it. It was purchased by my Son-In-Law in Green Bay,Wis. It has a dimple on the side with the Red Wing mark , otherwise it’s perfect. The leather handle has very little wear, and the cork is excellent as well.( I haven’t tried to remove it)I am interested in Red Wing and have had some really nice pieces. I want to know how old it is, where it was made, who do you think made it, and if you can what it’s worth? Thank you very much!! I am going to try to e-mail some pics but I have never done it before so if you don’t get them please let me know.
Answer: Your Red Wing canteen is a reproduction and has little to no value (other than what it cost new) to collectors. Original Red Wing stoneware items never had a wing in their oval only words. This is one way of identifying the reproductions. It would be nice if these new companies would place a date in these new ovals or stamps so new collectors would not confused by someone selling these reproductions as older pieces. Al Kohlman
