Question:
I have what I believe is a 5 gallon stoneware butter churn. A number 5 is at the top of the churn, a Union – Stoneware Company – Red Wing, Minn. oval is in the center and 2 birch leaves are below the oval. The markings are all colored black. What can you tell me about this piece of stoneware? Thank you.

Answer: Your 5 gallon butter churn was manufactured by the Minnesota Stoneware Company between !895 and 1909. With the oval in the center and the leaves below it, it is called a reverse oval churn. In mint condition and excellent markings it would have a value between $350 and $400. Al Kohlman
