Question:
Hello again, I am really hoping to start collecting RW Salt Glaze Jugs and I think I am starting to learn the correct shape and other things to look for (thumb press on the handle). To me, this jug appears to be RW. It is a 3 gallon, no chips or cracks and appears to have the thumb mark on the handle. Is it RW and what would the value be? You are great by the way – Thanks for providing this service.
Answer: Thank you for the nice comments. I am glad you like the site and hope you find it somewhat useful. Not totally sure that your jug is Red Wing. The spout looks Red Wing as does the decoration. I would like to see the back of the handles and a closer look at the clay to say for sure. But it very well could be Red Wing, but could also be another mid-western pottery that produced this jug. The decoration is the common lazy 8 target marked. Your jug has nice turkey drippings and orange peal. A little staining and somewhat light decoration. Value would be in the area of $300 to $400.
