Question:
Hi – I recently acquired a 6 gallon Signed Red Wing Butterfly Churn which does have several cracks. According to the 2002 Red Wing Stoneware ID and Value Guide by DePasquale, Peck and Peterson, on p. 55, they show a picture of "the only signed butterfly churn know". I’d like to know if any others have been found or if mine is the second known one. Also, I’d like to know an approximate value for my churn in this condition. Other than the cracks, the handles are in good condition and there is very little wear around the rim. There is some wear on the cobalt flower. I’ve tried to attach several pictures, but it seems I can only attach one at a time. If so, I may have to send a separate email. Please let me know who to send it to. Thanks for any info you can give me. Kathy Bruce
Answer: Kathy since the Red Wing Stoneware book was published, there have been a number of signed butterfly churns found including a knock out 8 gallon front stamped butterfly churn. Still these churns are not overabundant. Your churn is a gorgeous piece, however the damage is significant. Your churn could still fetch up to $1000 if there is a collector out there who desires one and is welling to have the damage repaired. Al Kohlman
