Question:
Hi, We about 2 years ago cleaned out the basement of our old farm house. Most of what we found was junk but we did find one what looks to be a Whiskey jug. It has a white or tan looking glaze on the bottom and a brown glaze on the top… this also includes the hadle of this jug. The bottom of this jug is not glazed but does have a star on it. This star is around 3 inches big. it is slighty raised from the rest of the bottem of the jug. The star then on it’s corners has N.O.R.T.H. all in capitals. The jug is around 10 1/2 inches tall and is about 22 3/4 inches around the white bottem 2/3 of the jug. The opening at the top is around 1 inch. It looks to be in good condition with no cracks. If you could please help me that would be great… Is this jug in fact a North Star Stoneware creation and if so about what year was it made? What is the aproximate value of a jug like this? Thank You! Stacey
Answer: Stacey, I would like to see the jug, however, with the information you provided, I am quite sure your jug is North Star. North Star began production in 1892, but fell into hard times and went out of business in 1896. From the size of the jug it sounds like a 1 gallon salt glazed North Star. This would have a value between $200 & $250. Now if it is a 2 gallon (I would use a gallon milk jug filled with water and pour it into your jug to make sure it is a 1 gallon and not a 2 gallon. If it is a 2 gallon North Star, then the value is between $350 & $400. Hopefully by the time you read my answer your jug will grow. Al Kohlman
