Question:
I have found a crock with a red wing on it…it appears to be very old 1 gal. there are no other marks of any kind. I am interested in history on Red Wing as to weather all pieces have numbers or signatures. Is it true that the older 1910 pcs. only had the Red Wing with no other markings. Sorry no picture Could you suggest a good book for info. Thank you Joyce
Answer: Joyce, most Red Wing crocks will have a number (size of crock by gallons), red wing or birch leaves and an oval (there are at least 13 different ovals that could be found on these crocks). However, the one gallon Red Wing crocks only have red wings on them. These are quite hard to find. The wings are either 4 1/2" long or 2 7/8" long. There are two very good books on the market for Red Wing Stoneware. Red Wing Stoneware by Dan DePasquate, Gail Peck and Larry Peterson & Red Wing Potters & Their Wares by Gary and Bonnie Tefft. If you completed a Google Search, you should be able to find these two books. Hope this is of some help. Al Kohlman
