Question:
I have a 10 gal. crock with a rooster stamped on it, and below the stamp, is the trademark of Plymouth Stoneware Co., Fort Dodge Iowa. This is all in blue. I believe that Red Wing Potteries purchased this company, and was wondering what the age and value that this piece would have. It is in good condition. thank you. Charlene Miedtke
Answer: Red Wing Union bought out the Plymouth Clay Products Co. of Fort Dodge, Iowa and operated it from 1909 till 1911. Red Wing used the birch leaves, replacing the Plymouth Chicken as a trademark.. Therefore your 10 gallon crock was manufactured before Red Wing purchased the Plymouth Clay Products Co. The Plymouth Chicken decoration is not sought after by many of the Red Wing Collectors. However, it is still a nice piece of stoneware that should demand a price in the area of $100 to $125.
