Question:
Hello – I have 2 round shallow dishes which are stamped on the bottom Red Wing Provencial Ware 23 – They don’t look like they have been used at all – excellent shape. They look like round au gratin dishers with simple and attractive fan-like handles. Dimensions: approx top diameter 6 1/2" / approx bottom diameter 4/1/2" They have the unglazed bisque exterior and glazed tan interior, and from descriptions sound like they are WWII era. Could you tell me how much they might be worth? Thanks for your help on this! If interested, I can provide photos, but I am concerned the file size might be a problem for this form. Joan

Answer: Red Wing called them Shirred Egg Dishes. They were made in two sizes and yours marked "23" are the smaller size. The larger size was marked 26 and was 9 inches across. The Shirred Egg Dishes were part of a baking set named Red Wing Provincial Cooking Ware and as you surmised it was made in the early 1940s. Collector interest in this set is low because it consists entirely of baking dishes such as bean pots, stock pots, casseroles, and a fry pan. No place setting pieces were made. Value for a #23 Shirred Egg Dish in mint condition would be $15-20.
