Question:
Have you ever seen this Red Wing bowl? It is 10inches (with 10 marked on the bottom) and it is pink. I am trying to find out info on it. I have attached a picture. It is in perfect condition…and I have two of them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Joey

Answer: This is a Reed mixing bowl, one of a wide variety of items in the Gypsy Trail line of dinnerware. This bowl was first available with the introduction of Gypsy Trail in 1935 and was also listed in the last known Gypsy Trail brochure in 1944. We believe Reed mixing bowls continued to be made into the late 1940s.

Reed mixing bowls were available in six sizes: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 inches. They were very popular with the buying public and can be easily found today, although some sizes and colors are more readily available than others. Red Wing sold these bowls individually or in sets of bowls in five different configurations. The 10 inch bowl was included with the full set of six bowls, but was excluded from the other four sets that were offered.

Initially these bowls were available in white, yellow, blue, turquoise, orange and mulberry. Additional colors were added over the years, including pink. Brochures from 1942 and 1943 list pink as an available color but only for the 10 inch bowl, not the other sizes. Thus your pink 10 inch bowl is a standard Reed mixing bowl but in an unusual color. Value for this bowl in mint condition would be around $50-60. Normal wear would reduce the value by 25%. Damage such as chips, cracks, hairlines, or stains would reduce the value by 50-75% depending on the extent of the damage.
