Question:
We have an incomplete set of Red Wing china. It includes 5 dinner plates, 7 salad plates, 7 cups, 8 saucers, salt and pepper shakers, a small cream pitcher, a similarly sized pitcher with two handles, and a tureen that is about 8" in diameter with a lid. A few pieces are chipped and a few are stained. Most, however, are in good condition. The complete set was a 1942 wedding gift. Can you provide us with an estimate of their value? Thanks. David
Answer: The photo shows a saucer from the Orleans dinnerware pattern. Values below are for Orleans pieces in excellent, undamaged condition.
Dinner plate: $15-20
Salad plate: $10-15
Cup & saucer: $15-20
Salt & Pepper: $20-25
Creamer: $15-20
Sugar without a cover: $5-10 (the two handled piece same size as creamer)
Casserole with cover: $25-35 (the tureen)
Estimating values for damaged pieces is not possible without knowing details about the chips, cracks, stains, etc. Generally any damage will reduce the value by 25 to 75% depending on the extent, location and visibility. The sugar bowl would be worth at least twice as much with a cover. Stains are very common with this Red Wing dinnerware line.
