Question:
Hi, I really love the Red Wing Dinnerware. I recently purchased, at an estate sale, a kidney shaped divided dish that is a cream colored base with black and green geometric squares pattern. It is marked with the Red Wing stamp in red. I am trying to find out what the piece is used for and what is the pattern name. I get lots of compliments on it and would love to know more about it including what it’s value is. Can you help please? Terri
Answer: The name of this pattern is Smart Set. It was introduced in 1953 and made until 1957. Smart Set was the first pattern produced in the Casual shape. Later Casual patterns included the very popular Bob White and Round Up patterns. The Smart Set pattern included a full range of table setting and serving pieces. The item in the photo is a divided vegetable dish.
The Smart Set pattern is prized by both Red Wing collectors and collectors of items from the 1950s. Some of the harder to find serving pieces sell for over $100. A Smart Set divided vegetable dish in excellent condition (no damage) is worth around $50.
