SALMON IN COLOR,,SHAPE OF A PEACH WITH COVER,,,SAYS REDWING USA ON BOTTOM APPROX,,3 IN. DEEP,,,6 IN HIGH AND 7 LONG WHat is the value and history? Laurie
Answer:
Laurie:
Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware included a wide variety of accessory items. They show up in price lists from 1940 until the last one we have from 1944. Your item is from a group advertised in trade publications as “TERRACE FRUIT SERVICE GROUP”. There are 3 sizes of apple, pear, and pineapple. The small size, which you have, was sold as a marmite if it had a lid and an individual salad bowl or berry bowl if it didn’t. The medium size was sold as a casserole if it had a lid and a berry bowl if it didn’t. The large size had no lid and was sold as a salad bowl. Red Wing also sold a leaf shaped stand for the small size. They were available in all of the standard Gypsy Trail colors. Your example does not match the standard listed colors but is a very common color. Ray Reiss in his book “Red Wing Art Pottery Two” (see page 103) has hypothesized that the color is an art pottery glaze called “Luster Rachelle”. I just call it peach or salmon. The color does not make it more valuable. I give it a value of $15-30 if it is in excellent condition. Any imperfections would reduce the value substantially.
