Question:
I have a set of redwing salt & pepper shakers. They both have a sticker that reads Redwing Art Pottery. They are sort of a chartreuse green. They have never been used. They have cork stoppers. There are no chips or cracks anywhere. Please advise how much these are worth? I am thinking of listing them for sale on ebay. Thank you. Judy

Answer:

Judy: You have a salt shaker and a pepper shaker ( called Shmoos by many collectors after characters in the comic strip Ll’l Abner) from the Town and Country line. This line was the only dinnerware line designed for Red Wing by the famous designer, Eva Zeisel and was introduced in 1947. The line was discontinued January 1, 1956 according to Company documents. Chartreuse was one of the original colors and seems to be second only to Sand in the number produced. It is likely that it continued to be produced until the end of production although I don’t have a price list later than March of 1955. Town and Country is highly collectable, particularly items in excellent condition. Other dinnerware items have been found with the Art Pottery sticker. It is unusual first because this is dinnerware not art pottery, and because most dinnerware was used and stickers would have been removed when they were washed. We really don’t know why it was used for this type of item. It may add some value for certain collectors. We also know that some Art Pottery stickers were not applied during the life of the Pottery and occasionally show up for sale. Thus, even though the sticker is authentic, it may have been applied to the piece years later. The value is really difficult to assign. Value is dependent on color and Chartreuse is one of the least valuable colors. Because of the sticker and unused condition they should probably bring more than $40 but Shmoo prices have been a bit soft lately. I see you have already listed them on eBay so I guess we will see.
