Question:
Larry, I was the one who just wrote last week inquiring about my chef pierre. It was the teal colored one. You replied back and considered it fleck blue nile. Question…. Where there different shades of the fleck blue nile? I was looking thru some Red Wing books with pottery that had the fleck blue nile and they look different, alot more blue. I was just wondering if it came in different shades? I attached a picture again so you can remember the original question. Thanks for your time again. :) Debby

Answer: The glazes under discussion here are from the art pottery lines, not dinnerware, and my knowledge of art pottery is quite limited. A cookie jar brochure dated January 1956 includes the Chef and describes the two available colors as "fleck pink" and "fleck blue". Because those are not dinnerware colors, I’ve assumed these are the Nile Fleck Pink and Nile Fleck Blue art pottery glazes that were used on many pieces in the mid-1950s. But perhaps the cookie jar fleck blue is a slightly different shade. I haven’t seen enough of them to establish a difference. And while your photo is greatly appreciated, the small size that is allowed here doesn’t provide enough detail for me to make any determination. Also keep in mind that glazes will vary a bit batch to batch, even when they are intended to be identical. Regardless, you have a very hard to find and desirable cookie jar.
