Question:
I bought a Redwing salad bowl 10 1/2" at an auction for $9.00 it is in good condition, it has a couple of spots inside the bowl, that are small holes in the ceramic, it is the Smart Set pattern I have the book Red Wing Dinnerware. Just wanted to know about how much it is worth, I saw the Bob white pattern salad bowl in an antique store for $99.00, and I read that the Bob White is the most popular pettern. Wendy

Answer:
A Smart Set large salad bowl in mint condition would be worth around $150. Any damage or flaws would reduce the value considerably. It is difficult to evaluate flaws without viewing the piece in person, but the small holes are probably air bubbles in the clay that burst when the bowl was fired in the kiln. The reduction in value would depend on how much the flaw detracts from the appearance of the bowl.
