Question:
I recently purchase in central california a redwing cobalt blue apple dish. there is an approx. 6"x5"leaf like base with an almost centered attached apple 4 1/2" high with a separate lid . The lid is lifted by a handle in the form of a short stem and two leaves. The bottom is blue and barely legible"redwing" is at the edge of the 3" diameter base. Is this really red wing? what is the approximate age of the piece? what is its value or fair market price? Thank you. Fred
Answer: Yes, your piece was made by Red Wing and is part of the extensive Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware line. You have an apple marmalade jar with attached stand. This piece was introduced in 1940 along with three sizes of bowls, casseroles, cookie jars, and marmites in the shapes of apples, pears and pineapples. The marmalade jar was also available without the attached stand. These fruit-shaped items were made for several years then phased out. By 1944 all had been discontinued.
A blue apple marmalade with stand in excellent condition would be worth $25 to $30.
