Question:
While going through my deceased Mother in Law’s things, I found a glossy yellow rooster, approx 8 inches long by 4 inches high, 2 pieces, (bottom/bowlish part and lid- some sort of container?) with "450" RED WING" on the bottom. Very good condition. I have searched the web with no luck! Any help would be appreciated!
Answer:
The number on the bottom is 250, not 450. You have a marmite (individual casserole) in the shape of a rooster. A larger casserole in the same rooster shape and marked 249 was also made, along with a marmite and casserole in the shape of a fish. These pieces were among a large group of colorful pieces sold as Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware. The rooster and fish marmite and casserole were introduced in 1942 and made until sometime near the end of World War II. Value for a yellow rooster marmite in excellent condition is $40-60.
