Question:
I have a three piece white Red Wing Pottery chafing dish set I would like to know the value of. A large covered meat platter, a divided vegetable bowl with covers, and a large bowl with a cover. I think they may be over 30 years old and am going to attempt to send a picture.
Answer: Your three items are from the Continental Buffet serving set. Continental Buffet consists of four different warming dishes as well as a beverage server with warmer stand, salad bowl with metal fork & spoon, salt & pepper shakers, creamer and sugar bowl. The warmer stands and covers are nickel-plated. This was a well-made, heavy, expensive set. Continental Buffet was available in two colors, matte white and matte blue.
Continental Buffet was made in the late 1950s. The set did not sell well due to the high price. By 1960 it had been replaced by Buffet Royale, a similar buffet service set but lighter in weight with wooden handles and serving stands. It was also considerably less expensive. An undated Continental Buffet brochure lists the following prices: 2qt casserole with stand: $30, Double Casserole with stand: $42.50, domed platter with stand: $36, beverage server with stand: $26. Prices for the same Buffet Royale pieces in 1960 were $14.95, $24.95, $24.95 and $14.95.
Continental Buffet does not include standard place settings (plates, bowls, cup & saucer), thus it is of more interest to specialty collectors rather than general dinnerware collectors. But values are relatively high because these pieces are scarce.
Estimated values for your three pieces, assuming they are in excellent condition:
2 quart casserole with stand: $50-75
Platter with domed cover and stand: $75-100
Double casserole with cover and stand: $75-100
