Question:
I Think? this is a Red Wing Usa Vegetable Bowl With Lid. It has 2 handles, A Slanted Knob Handle on top (Black), the bowl is almost an off white color with Black and Off Green and Grey Squiggles and Squares. It measures from handle to handle 14 1-2" , bottom to top handle 7 1/2" ,& bowl diameter 9". These are approx, & this was purchased in a antique store in Tn. in 2001 for $119.00 + tax a gift from my sister. Can you tell me an approx value and what is the pattern name. Ihave google numerous of times and never found one like it.

Answer: The name of the pattern is Smart Set and the item is a covered casserole. Smart Set was introduced in 1953 and produced until 1958. The pattern is very collectible today, and is especially sought by collectors of things from the 1950s.

Smart Set casseroles were available in three sizes: 1 quart, 2 quart or 4 quart. From the dimensions you provided it appears yours is the 4 quart size. While the 2 quart casserole is quite common, the 4 quart casserole can be difficult to find. Casserole covers were available in two colors: black or patterned (like the base).

I haven’t seen a Smart Set casserole this size sell recently, so it’s difficult to set a value. You should be able to recoup the $119 price paid in 2001. A collector seeking this size might pay $150 to $200. These values assume excellent condition — no nicks, chips, cracks or hairlines.

Smart Set pieces appear for sale regularly on eBay. Now that you know the pattern name you should find it easier to locate via Google or another search engine.
