Question:
About 12" wide from edge to edge on top; about 6" wide at bottom. I think it was my grandmother’s. Thank you Jan!

Answer: Jan, you have a serving bowl from the "Fruit or Salad Set". That is the name as listed in an early 1940s Red Wing catalog. The set consists of the 12.75 inch serving bowl and 8.5 inch plates. The plates feature the same fluted edge and each was decorated with one of the four fruits shown on the bowl: Apple, pear, cherries, or grapes.

This set was produced in the early 1940s. I’m not certain when the set was introduced but it was no earlier than 1941. A November 1946 price list states the Fruit or Salad Set had been discontinued and no longer available, so we know production ceased sometime before then.

The plates are fairly common and are worth $20 to $25 each in excellent condition. The bowl is more difficult to find, especially ones without damage. The fluted edges seemed to chip quite easily. The value for a serving bowl in excellent condition is $75 to $125.
