Question:
I have a 12 pc.(almost complete) dinnerware set plus soup bowls, lunch plates, cups & saucers, tea pot, butter dish, large platter, and some misc. pieces. I am interested in knowing what the value could possibly be. The pattern is Iris. Is there much interest in this pattern? Would appreciate your advice. Thanks so much!

Answer: Iris dinnerware is very collectible. Many people consider Iris to be the prettiest of Red Wing’s dinnerware patterns. It’s a nice pattern to collect — not too hard to find pieces but not too easy either.

Based on the information provided, it’s difficult to accurately assess your set for several reasons. There is no mention of the condition of your Iris pieces, and condition is an all-important factor. A value can’t be placed on "misc. pieces", I’d need to know which specific pieces are included in your collection. Iris accessory pieces were available in either Mulberry or Chartreuse colors, and there is no indication as to the color of yours. I would place the value of Mulberry pieces a bit higher than Chartreuse. And does "12 pc." mean a 12 piece collection or a 12 place settings?

Of the pieces you’ve identified, the teapot and butter dish would have the most value. A mulberry Iris teapot would be worth $50 to $75; a chartreuse teapot about $10 to $15 less. Take a good look at the end of the teapot’s spout and the handle on the cover — damage most often occurs at those points. The butter dish would be worth $30 to $40; the platter $30 to $35. The serving pieces (bowls, cups, plates) are worth $10 to $25 each, depending on the size. All values assume excellent condition, any damage reduces the value significantly.  Larry
