Question:
Hello, This piece is rough textured on the outside and orange glazed on the inside. It’s stamped Red Wing USA 405. Could you tell me about the piece and it’s value. It is five and one half inches tall and about 22-23" around. Thank-You.

Answer:

You have a bean pot from the Provincial Bakeware line. This line was introduced in the early 1960s (probably 1963) and continued in production until the pottery closed in 1967. The Bakeware line included bean pots (3 sizes), casseroles (3 sizes), marmite (individual casserole), oval baking dishes (2 sizes) and an egg dish. The exteriors of these pieces have a tan glaze with a rough texture and the interiors are rust colored. The bean pots, casseroles and marmite had covers in the same rust color. A matching dinnerware pattern in the same rust color was made with pieces borrowed from the Village Green line.

The three bean pots sizes are Large 5 quart, Medium 3 quart and Small 1 1/2 quart. Sorry, I don’t know the dimensions of these pots or which one is stock number 405. From your photo it appears to be the Medium size. But size won’t have much affect the value of your bean pot. The Provincial Bakeware line is not popular with most collectors, and your bean pot appears to be missing the cover. Value for the bean pot without a cover is minimal, perhaps $5. With cover the value would be around $20 to $25.
