Provincial dinnerware, rust color

Question:

Hi!

I acquired this set of, what I think is, Oomph dinnerware last summer.  I am curious to the value of this set and if I decide to sell it, where/how I would do that.

It’s not a complete set and some of the pieces have small chips. Any information you have is greatly appreciated!

Answer:

The dinnerware in the photo is not Oomph, which was dark brown and green and made in the 1940s.  This rust colored dinnerware was known as Provincial and was made in the early 1960s.  It was made to go with the Provincial Bakeware set of casseroles, bean pots, and other baking dishes.  Provincial dinnerware is hard to find today but it doesn’t attract much attention from collectors, probably because due to the limited number of items included in the pattern.

Can’t really tell from the photo but this appears to be a service for eight with a few accessory pieces included.  If all pieces were in mint condition I would put the value of this collection at $300 to $400.  Any damage reduces the value considerably, usually by 25 to 75% or more.  The more severe the damage, the greater the reduction.  The salt & pepper shakers, sugar and creamer, and the butter dish are the most valuable pieces in this collection.  If they are in undamaged condition it might be worthwhile to offer them separately from the rest of the set.

12 gallon Red Wing Birch leaf crock

Question:

Hello Al, Thank You for this great site!!! Wow this is really some neat items. I can see how you can get hooked on it!

I recently acquired the attached 12 gal. crock for 70.00 at an estate sale. It does not appear to have any cracks or crazing. It does have 1 small chip-hole that seems to be there from when it was fired. I am wondering how I did on this?

Also I am thinking of purchasing a 4 gal. Ice water crock as pictured and wondered what a fair value would be?

Thanks again in advance for your wonderful insights.

Tim

Answer:

Tim, you did well on the 12 gallon Red Wing Birch leaf crock.  With just a minor air bubble pop, the value is around $150.  The 4 gallon Birch leaf Ice Water in perfect condition  $800 to $1000.  Al Kohlman

Cow & Calf figurine

Question:

I have a cow and calf figurine and would like to know the value. It is in perfect shape with no damage. It is light brown in color. There are no markings on the piece.  It was given to a red wing employee in 1911. A photo is attached.

Thanks for your help, Jim

Answer:

Jim, I think you would have paid about $.90 for this Cow & Calf figurine back in 1911.  With the economy being down, these Cow & Calf figurines have went down in there value.  Still today, in perfect condition, $3000 to $4000.  Nice little gem you have there.    Al Kohlman

Red Wing Water Cooler, spigot hole in back

Question:

Hi,

I have what I think is a 4 gallon Red Wing Water Cooler, but it does not say Water Cooler and the spigot hole is on the back side.  It is in perfect condition and has a cobalt 4 on the inside.  So do you think its a water cooler that a mistake was made on or is it something else.  The lid came with it and I would like to know if its a Red Wing lid and what its for. Maybe your opinion on value too.

Thank you very much.

Craig

Answer:

Craig, you have the early Red Wing Water Cooler.  Without the word Water Cooler, it could have been a special order is what I think.  The lid is not a Red Wing lid.  The correct lid would be a button water cooler lid which would have the same type of stripes on it with a molded form of daisy petals surrounding the button handle of the lid.  If your cooler has no damage, I would place the value between $400 & $550.   I realize this is quite a spread, however, your cooler is quite unique which could very well increase its value to the right collector.  Al Kohlman
