Fondoso creamer

Question

Hello! I have a small piece of Red Wing I picked up at an auction. I was hoping to find out its value and history. I doubt it’s a very exciting piece, but I do love it! It’s a small orange pitcher about 5 inches tall and has a chip on the rim, as seen in the photo. Any information you can share your be appreciated. Thank you for your time! -Becca

Answer

The item in the photo is a creamer from the Fondoso dinnerware pattern. The pattern was designed by Belle Kogan, a well known designer who developed several other dinnerware patterns and numerous art pottery items for Red Wing.  Fondoso is part of Red Wing’s extensive Gypsy Trail line.  The pattern was introduced in 1939 and made until around 1942.  Many different pieces were made in the Fondoso pattern, ranging from plates and bowls to pitchers, teapots, casseroles and salt & pepper shakers.

The creamer would be worth $15 to $20 in excellent condition.  With the damaged rim your creamer isn’t worth much, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy it!

6002 Bowl

Question:

I have a piece of art pottery. It has “Red Wing USA ” etched in the bottom of it. Also, the number 6002 is etched above it. What would this be worth today?

Answer

Hi, this is part of the “6000″ series done in 1949. The glaze is called quartz and was made in a white/gray, red, or yellow glaze. Fairly rare forms, not too many were made. This is shape #6002. Value is around $300.00 in perfect condition. Thanks, steve n rose

Random Harvest Tid Bit tray

Question:

Hello! Today I picked up a Random Harvest 3-tiered serving dish. I have not been able to find any information about this particular item and would appreciate anything you could share about it.

Thanks!

Beth

Answer:

Collectors refer to this as a tidbit tray.  Tidbit trays were not shown in dinnerware brochures or dealer price lists, but were included on ”Gift or Novelty” brochures.  The brochure included a disclaimer that tidbit trays could not be ordered for a specific pattern.  The factory would send whatever tidbit trays were available at the time of the order.

Tidbit trays can be found in various 1-tier, 2-tier and 3-tier configurations.  Some tidbit trays have a small bowl as the top tier.  Red Wing made and sold tidbit trays as a way to use up surplus stock.  That’s why they could not be ordered in a specific pattern.

Because they were not standard dinnerware production items, some collectors feel tidbit trays have no value; that are merely plates and bowls ruined by drilling a hole in the middle.  Other collectors believe they have value because they were assembled by Red Wing workers and offered for sale as novelty items.  A 3-tiered tidbit tray in excellent condition is worth around $25.

Saxon Line, early brushedware

Question

Hello, I can’t find anything like this anywhere. I can only say from what I have read that it’s an 1880′s cold painted artware vase. We are selling and don’t know what to put on it. It seems rare. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Robb

Answer

this would be some of the earliest brushedware/art pottery from Red Wing, the Saxon line, I haven’t seen one sell, I would guess somewhere in the 200.00 range.  Not much info on it, just a few show up every now and then.  thanks, steve n rose

2 gallon Red Wing Churn, spider crack

Question:

Hello,

I have searched your website and learned a lot about the different stoneware and the history.  It’s been a journey.

I have a friend who has had a stroke and is asking me to help her liquidate her treasures.  I have attached photos of her 2 Gallon Redwing Churn that has a 4” Redwing with the Union stamp.  There are a couple of what I hope are the crazing cracks?  one outside and one inside.  There is no lid with this.  I could not find a churn close enough to this one to assign a sale value. Thank you and keep up the great public service you all provide.

Laurie

Answer:

Laurie, your Red Wing butter churn with the large spider crack in the side would have a value in the area of $50 to $75.   Collectors are looking for perfect pieces and with the spider and the spider in the front, the value just falls when there are a number of prefect 2 gallon churns out there for sale that are perfect.   Still a cute churn.  Al Kohlman

Red Wing one gallon crock, 4 inch wing

Question:

Hi

I recently came across this crock at an estate sale It has the 4 1/2 inch wing and is in near perfect condition with the exception of a  tiny base chip about 1/4″ wide by 1/2″ The rest of it is in perfect condition It came with a lid that has a button knob marked with a 1 I know its a Red Wing crock, but is the lid authentic?

Thanks

Frank

Answer:

Frank, your Red Wing one gallon crock has a value between $350 & $400. Thankfully the chip is really small or the value would have dropped to half.  The lid in not a Red Wing lid and therefore has no value.   Nice looking piece with a excellent applied red wing.   Al Kohlman
