Question:
I have three crocks a 2, 5 & 6. The 2 has a larger wing stamp than the 5 & 6. What can you tell me about the difference in the size of the stamp. Dina

Answer: Dina, the size of the wing changed in the 1930′s. So your 2 gallon crock must have the 4 inch wing (1909 till 1930)and the 5 & 6 must have the 2 7/8 inch wings. When the war started in the 1930′s there was a great demand for uranium (which is used to hold the red color of the wing when fired at high temperatures) . When demand of anything goes up, so does the cost. It was at this time that the Red Wing Stoneware Company reduced the size of the Red Wing because of the price of uranium. The 2 7/8 inch wing became the standard until 1947 when stoneware production ceased. Al Kohlman
