Question:
Hi, I recently acquired a Minnesota Stoneware Co. 3 gallon salt glaze crock lid. It is in excellent condition (no chips, cracks, repairs), however, it is somewhat dirty around the unglazed ring and the outer lip. No rust or mineral stains, just lightly dirty. What can I safely use to clean this? I know that bleach is bad for stoneware. How about soap? Bob

Answer: Bob, a good detergent or better yet degreaser works well to remove and soil or oily residue. Don’t worry about hurting the glaze. Also use a scrub brush and have at it. If there is any staining use peroxide and let it soak for an hour and see how it looks. You can soak for a day or two and the peroxide will not hurt it. Good luck. Al Kohlman
