Question:
Hi, I have a jug that I think is about 2 gallons. There are no markings on the outside. On the bottom it says Minnesota Stoneware Co., Red Wing. Could you tell me anything about it? It is in excllent shape, no cracks, just a small chip on the body. It is a light beige color all over. Thank you for your help. Cathy
Answer: Cathy, your bottom signed Minnesota Stoneware jug was most likely used for vinegar. Most of these smaller jugs where purchased to carry vinegar from the store to your home. Back in that era there was a great deal of canning with vinegar being one of the main ingredients in canning meats and vegetables. All the stoneware companies produced these smaller vinegar jugs, and because of the quantities needed, most were mast produced with no decorations. Al Kohlman
