Question:
I have an 8" salt glaze cover that I think is North Star. The knob is exactly like the one on the shard shown on page 20 in "A Guide to Red Wing Markings" by David Newkirk (1986). The underside is Albany Slip. It has a small chip on the rim that hardly shows from the top and a couple on the underside. I would like to get any information you might have on this piece and approximate value. Thank you, Dayton
Answer: Dayton, I have David Newkrik’s Guide to Red Wing markings Book II and there is nothing related to North Star lids on Page 20. On page 37 there is a North Star zinc glaze lid and a salt glaze photoed there, but the Salt Glaze photo is so poor that I cannot tell much of anything. If you could send me a photo of the lid I could help you out. Or compare it to the North Star lids on Page 66 for Red Wing potters and their Wares and this may give you all the answers you are looking for with it’s history. You could then get that information back on what you found and I will help you out with an estimated value. Thanks Al Kohlman
