Question:
Hi Al, What can you tell me about the round oval like the one pictured. I am assuming there are rarer than your standard oval. I don’t run into them too often. Was it used for certain years? I have only seen them on crocks with a 2" wing, so are they not as old? Were they used on more than just crocks, like jugs and churns? Thanks, Chris

Answer: Chris, this is a great question. These round ovals (there were 3 of them) were originated for art-ware in the 1920′s & 30′s. However, I have seen them on 2 gallon crocks with the small wings, 5 gallon shoulder jugs (again with the small wings) and Apples Sauce jars (those with the Albany slip top) I also own a 2 gallon crock with just the 2 and a spigot hole on the front of the crock, but when you turn the crock over and look at the bottom, there is the round oval stamped in black. So they have been used on stoneware and with the size of the wings on these pieces it was during & after the 1930′s. Al Kohlman
