Question:
Hello, I have collected for years. This 3 gallon salt glaze is a recent find and the first side stamped jug I’ve found. The cobalt 3 on the front is not the most striking I’ve seen, but it’s there. Also, the jug is molded.I haven’t seen that in a salt glaze either. On the back, the letter D is stamped twice. What company does that stand for? My book says stamping doubles the value but it doesn’t explain the meaning of the various company letters. Is this molded 3 gallon a Red Wing? And what value does it have? No cracks, but three small chips. Thanks, Matt
Answer: Matt your 3 gallon salt glaze jug is not Red Wing. When someone refers to a piece of stoneware being side stamped, they are talking about the company name being pressed or embossed in the piece. A letter or a number does not mean it is side stamped. Red Wing did not stamped their pieces with a letter. This may be an Ohio piece, but I could not say for sure. Not being Red Wing, I just could not give you an honest value on your jug. Sorry I could not be of further help. Al Kohlman
