Question:
We have a crock that is about twenty inches tall with a diameter of about 18 inches. It has a relief scene on it with trees (like a forest), a river and two deer. One of the deer is a fawn and the other is mature with antlers. There is a green glaze or paint on the inside. If you have any information on this piece we would appreciate your insight. Thank you, Katherine Rycroft
Answer: Katherine, your crock is called a sand jar and they were used mostly in lobbies of hotels and other places of business. They were made by the Red Wing Stoneware Company and the Western Stoneware Company. Red Wing Collectors will usually collect those sand jars which are signed Red Wing. These unsigned jars (depending on color) (Cobalt Blue is the most valued) can sell between $200 and $400 in mint condition.
