Question:
My family found this crock at an auction. My sister-in-law who collects red wing crocks thinks that the elephant ears marking is characteristic of red wing. There are no cracks or chips in the crock and the only markings are the "4" and the elephant ears. Is this a red wing crock? If so, any idea of the value?
Answer: Your crock is Red Wing, but the decoration is not elephant ears, but Birch leaves. Red Wing used the birch leaves before they developed the Red Wing in 1909. Your crock does not have an oval. This may be do to Red Wing selling there crocks to Sears & Roebuck for resale. Sears & Roebuck requested no ovals be placed on the crocks they purchase for resale. Value of your Red Wing crock would be in the area of $60 to $75. Al Kohlman
