Question:
Hi there! I found a crock in my Grandma’s chicken house and was wondering what you could tell me about it. I asked her about it and she said it was inherited from one side of the family or the other. She said she used it to make pickles in. She will be 84 in 2 weeks. It is VERY heavy, no cracks at all, no handles or drains as I see some crocks do have them. But it seems to be in perfect condition with a little cleaning. I do have a close up picture of the marking that says RED WING UNION(?) STONEWARE CO RED WING-MINN. What can you tell me about it??
Answer: You have an early 30 gallon Red Wing zinc glazed crock that was made between 1895 & before 1909. It has the first Red Wing oval and is nicely marked. In mint condition your are looking at a value between $375 & $400. Nice looking crock. Gotta love it. Al Kohlman
