Question:
Hello again, thanks for the answer on the 2 gal dbl p bottom signed crock, my question now is about markings. I’ve noticed on other 2 gal dble p crocks, the design seems bigger or at least covers more of the lower half, does this seemingly smaller design affect value? Also I have a 5 gal crock w/handles, the oval and the wing markings are a bit on the light side (although not as light as the glare in the photo makes it) and I realize that is less desirable but my real question is about the ’5′ it seems to be out of line with the lower markings… is this a mistake? does it influence the value one way or another? there also is a black mark to the left of the 5 that seems to be in the glaze (perfectly smooth and doesn’t come off) thanks again Al…
Answer: The 2 gallon double P crock decorations are usually a little larger than the single P’s and the target marked crocks. However, this does not usually affects it’s value. Value will come in how dark the cobalt, how balanced the decoration is on the front of the crock and of course any damage or stains on the crock. On your 5 gallon crock and the 5 not being balanced with the rest of the decorations. This will affect the value as well. Collectors will select a well balanced decorated crock over one that is not. Also, the darker and clearer the decoration the greater the value. The black mark to the left of the 5. Is the mark under the glaze? If it is, it cannot be removed. If it is on top of the glaze, try a little paint stripper. Paint stripper will not hurt the crock and works well removing paint and other chemicals that have found there way on these crocks.
