Question:
Hello, My questions about this 4 gallon RW beehive is about the marking and value. I’ve read that 4 gallon jugs are desirable, but is this a "lazy eight with target & tail," or do those squiggly loops indicate a "tornado?" Has a few turkey droppings and in absolutely mint condition. Not even a single chip. Thanks.
Answer: Let’s start with your beehive. I do not believe it is Red Wing. The markings are not true to Red Wing’s style. I would bet your piece is an Ohio piece of stoneware by looking at the decorations and the small dark spec’s in the clay. I would call the markings a lazy 8 with a target. However, it is not a true target with the cobalt continuing well below the target mark. The 4 gallon beehive jugs do carry a larger value than the 3 or 5"s. With your jug not being Red Wing, I would place the value in the neighborhood of $200 to $300. Still a nice looking beehive. Al Kohlman
