Question:
What is the age and value of my 20 lb butter crock. There is no wing, but the bottom is marked Red Wing and I can not make out the rest. It apprears very old. It measures almost 6" high by 9-1/2" on top and 9" wide on bottom. One small surface chip on side at the bottom. Thank You, Joan

Answer:

Joan, Without the wing, it is extremely difficult to age your butter crock. The 20 gallon butter crocks were manufactured sometime after 1915 through 1930. The wing on these 20 pound butter crocks is what demands the price. A 4 1/2" wing would demand a greater value than one with a 2 7/8" wing. With no wing, the printed 20 lbs and a surface chip, I would place the value in the area of $200. If your 20 pound butter crock is plain with no 20 lb symbol, the value would be reduced to a range of $50 to $75. Al Kohlman
