Question:
I have found in my dads workshop cabinet 4 of the small saucers and 2 of the pie plates and are curious of how old they are and what is the style name or series they are called? If you could also give rough estimeate of thier value also. Thanks for your help. Mark

Answer: Your items are from the Caprice dinnerware pattern. Caprice was one of two patterns made in the Fancy Free shape. The other pattern, Desert, featured a cactus in the design and is far more popular with collectors than Caprice. Both patterns were introduced in 1952 and dropped from production in 1953. The Fancy Free patterns were designed by Belle Kogan, a well known designer from New York who produced many art pottery designs for Red Wing and also a few dinnerware patterns. Fancy Free plates and bowls featured a rolled rim that was very susceptible to chipping. Pieces in mint condition are scarce. Your Caprice saucers and plates are worth $10-15 each in mint condition. Chips and other damage will reduce the value significantly.
