Hello, I have a set of what I believe to be Brittany. There are 35 pieces, plus two lids. They are stamped Red wing on the bottom and the cups are stamped with a date of Feb 25 1948. They are in very nice condition.
8 dinner plates (1 plate has 1 small chip)
16 small/salad plates
8 cups (1 very small chip) 1 teapot w/lid Sugar w/lid and Creamer jar
I would greatly appreciate any further information you can give me on this beautiful set. I would like to sell them and am wondering what there worth. Thank you for your time! Amanda
Answer: Brittany is one of four patterns made in the Provincial shape. The four patterns were named after the four provinces of France. The Brittany pattern was introduced in 1941 and made until 1950. Some dinnerware items made by Red Wing during this period were dated. Dates are found most frequently on cups but other pieces were dated as well. The reason for dating some pieces is unknown but they were probably used to identify production runs or glaze batches. Dated pieces are not rare or even hard to find, but the date adds interest and increases the value by 25 to 50%.
Your list of items includes 16 small/salad plates and 8 cups but no saucers. Any chance that 8 of those small plates could be saucers?
