Question:
I bought a piece of what I believe to be the Red Wing Driftwood pattern at a local antique sale. There is a red marking on the bottom with a wing logo, and it says simply Red Wing Handpainted. The number "297" is printed beneath it. The plate is odd-shaped – neither round nor square. There is also a waffling type texture to the platter – it is not smooth. Can you give me a history of the piece and approximate background? It was purchased for $9. Thank you!

Answer: You do indeed have a Driftwood platter. Driftwood was one of six patterns in the Anniversary shape. Four of the patterns were introduced in 1953, which was the 75th anniversary of Red Wing Stoneware Company. Driftwood was the last of the Anniversary patterns to be introduced; it was made from 1955 to 1961. The platter was made in two sizes, 13 inch and 15 inch. Driftwood platters are valued at $25-35.
