Question:
How old/valuable is this plate? My mom had it for years, I think. Seems to always have been around. Its 8-1/2" across. On the back it is printed RedWing Pottery Hand Painted. Thanks, Ellen S
Answer: Your grapes plate is from a set that consists of four different plates and a large serving bowl. This set was produced in the early to mid 1940s. The name of the set is listed in a Red Wing catalog as simply "Fruit or Salad Set". Each 8.5" plate is decorated with one of four fruits: apple, pear, grapes, or cherries. The large 12.75" serving bowl is decorated with all four fruits.
The set is not rare, but pieces in excellent condition can be rather difficult to find. Chips and stains are common in this set. If your grapes plate is in excellent condition it would be worth $25 to $30; damage reduces the value by half or more.
