Question:
Hi, I recently aquired a piece of pottery and I was told it was Red Wing due to the cobalt blue design panited on it. However, I was wondering if the crocks at any time made by Red Wing have a darker color on the inside. It is a bigger crock, and will try to get you a picture as time allows. Thanks
Answer: The crock you have pictured here is a North Star Stoneware Company salt glazed primitive butterfly. North Star Stoneware Company was located in Red Wing, Minnesota and the piece is considered to be Red Wing. All salt glazed pieces or pieces of this era had the dark Albany slip interiors. Some of the Albany slip was a little lighter (almost Carmel in color) while most was dark and shiny like yours. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
