Question:
I have a glazed jar with lid. It has a handle with wire and black wood. Size is 6" high and 6" in diameter. Condition is very good except for an old chip (about 3/8" x 3/8") on upper edge of lid. Bottom is marked with RWSCO. Shape: measiring up 4" from bottom, the jar curves up to a rim on top with the indention for the lid. The lid has a ring 1" from the edge thereafter dipping into the center where the handle crosses from one edge ring to the other and is solid. I do not have a picture available but hope you can help me identify this piece. Thank you for your assistance. Florine
Answer: Florine, you have a Red Wing Bailed Packing jar. These jars came in 3, 5, 10 & 20 pound sizes. I believe yours is the 5 pound size. These bailed packing jars were used for preserves, jams and fruit butter.. Value in mint condition and bottom signed $80 to $100. Al Kohlman
