Question:
Hi, This plate was my grandmothers, it measures 14 and a half inches across. The glaze is kinda shiny, and the back says "redwing pottery" and "hand painted". The writing on the back is in blue and the wing is blue as well, and stands verticle. Is this actual redwing? If so, what era and what is the name of the pattern? value? any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.. Oh, is it ovenproof? Larisa ps: can you send me a link to view this on the website, or do you email me directly? Thanks again. Larisa

Answer: The name of this pattern is Ardennes. It was one of four patterns in the Provincial shape and all four patterns were named for provinces in France. Ardennes was introduced in 1941, discontinued in the mid 1940s, then re-introduced in 1949 with several design changes. The later version of Ardennes was discontinued at the end of 1951. Your item is a 14 inch chop plate (or platter) and it appears to be from the later version that was made 1949-1951.

Most later Red Wing dinnerware included the tern "ovenproof" either in promotional literature or marked on the item itself. But I find no such documentation for the Provincial patterns. This means either Red Wing did not consider the line to be ovenproof or else the company hadn’t considered this factor as a promotional tool. Without documentation I cannot say your chop plate is ovenproof, although I believe it most likely is.

Value for a later version Ardennes 14" chop plate in excellent condition is $30-40. Any damage or staining will reduce the value significantly.
