Question:
I found this very beautiful platter a while back and my boyfriend had noticed it had a red wing art sticker on the back. I’ve never seen red wing have anything like this and have no idea how to research it. I would like to know as much about it as I can learn. Thank you so much for your time. It’s between 16"-18" in diameter and weighs quite a bit. There’s a silver sticker on the back that says Red wing art pottery. There are no chips. It has what looks like hand painted flowers and a victorian couple getting on a boat. Aundrea

Answer: Red Wing made platters to go with most of their dinnerware patterns. These platters range in size from 12 to 15 inches. The Casual line also included a 20 inch platter made for use with a metal warming stand. But there were no Red Wing dinnerware platters made with a diameter of 16 to 18 inches.

Perhaps this is an item from one of Red Wing’s art pottery lines, as implied by the silver sticker on the back. To my knowledge no large art pottery platter was made but my knowledge of art pottery is limited. The decoration appears to have been applied as a decal rather than hand painted like most Red Wing pottery. If the artwork is painted rather than decal, then such a detailed scene would be very unusual for a piece of Red Wing. Finally, original unused Red Wing stickers and labels are known to be in circulation and thus cannot guarantee the authenticity of a piece. Red Wing stickers have been found on non-Red Wing pieces, placed there either as a prank or to commit deception. Nearly all Red Wing art pottery has a 3 or 4 digit shape number somewhere on the bottom, imparted to the item via the molding process.

A photo of the entire platter would help determine if this is indeed a piece of Red Wing or is something else.
