Question:
I have an assortment of Red Wing hand painted pieces with western theme – mostly cowboys branding cattle. The piece in front of me is a meat platter with the number 349 on it. The other pieces are packed away in boxes (cereal bowls, a few dinner plates, cups, saucers, and then some larger pieces like a bean pot with a lid, an approximate 2 gal. piece with spiggot, 2 pitchers, etc.) I’m not sure I’d ever want to sell them, but wondered what their value might be. The dishes aren’t in as good a shape as the serving pieces. Some have chips. The meat platter has a couple of small chips on the underside of the rim. What can you tell me about them? I’m sure my parents bought them at Red Wing probably in the early 60′s, if I had to guess the time frame. Thanks. Dori

Answer: Dori, The name of your cowboy-themed pattern is Round Up. It was introduced in 1958 and produced for about six years. Round Up is a pattern in Red Wing’s Casual line, which also includes Bob White, Smart Set, and others. Your parent made a wise investment back in the 1960s. Today Round Up is one of the most highly collected Red Wing dinnerware patterns. Demand exceeds the supply, especially for the larger hard-to-find accessory pieces.

Platters were made in two sizes: 13" and 20". The 20" platter was made to fit on a metal warming stand that includes two candle holders and ceramic handles. The "349" mark on your platter is a production code and does not help identify the item. Value for these pieces:
13" platter: $50-60
20" platter: $65-75
20" platter with stand: $150-200

The two gallon piece with spigot is a water cooler, and it should have a cover. This is a rare and very desirable piece. Value for a complete Round Up water cooler would be over $1000.

Three types of pitchers were made.
Water pitcher 60oz: $150-200
Water pitcher 112oz: $250-300
Beverage server with stopper: $150-200; with metal stand: $200-250

No bean pot was made in the Round Up pattern. Most likely you have either a gravy boat (one handle and a pouring lip) or a casserole (two handles).

Salad plate: $25-30
Cup & Saucer: $30-40
Sauce dish: $25-30
Covered casserole 2 qt: $75
Relish dish: $60-80
Salt & pepper: $125-175
Creamer & sugar: $70-90
Covered Gravy: $75-100

All of the above values assume excellent condition. Damage or flaws will reduce the value significantly.
