3 gallon hand turned water cooler

Question:

Dear Folks, I have a 3 gallon water cooler with the lid. The lid has a few chips on the inside but in good shape on the outside. The crock its self is in good shape with little to no spider cracks. a small manufacture flaw and the spout works. Is the 3 gallon produce in quantity or not ? What years where they made, and what is its value.

It is marked in an oval Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. thanks For your time Jesse

Answer:

Jesse, you have the early hand turned Red Wing water cooler with the correct and hard to find button lid.  The cooler itself has a value in the area of $500 to $600.  The lid with just the chips underneath as the same value of $500 to $600.  In total $1000 to $1200 for the complete cooler with lid and spigot.   The 3 gallon coolers are common, but these hand turn coolers are somewhat harder to find.  The hand turn water coolers were produced somewhere between 1918 to the early 1920′s.

Answer:

Vern, the Red Wing wax sealers were the early version of the fruit jar.  They were produced anywhere between 1880′s and 1895.  If both of the wax sealers are in perfect condition and bottom signed the value is around $75 each.  Al Kohlman

15 gallon Red Wing crock

Question:

Dear Experts,

I have recently received a nice stoneware pot and would like to know more about it (it’s birthdate, value, and anything else that might be interesting). I’m attaching a photo or two. Thank you!

Erik

Madison, WI

Answer:

Eric, we live in the same city and state!  I am on the north side of Madison.   Anyway, your 15 gallon Red Wing crock was produced between 1915 & 1930.  If in perfect condition, the value is between $125 & $150.  This is do to the smaller wing and stenciling not being as perfect as collector want today.  Al Kohlman

Red Wing 3 gallon stoneware crock , ski oval

Question:

Hello there my name is Steve and I have a question for you. I have had this stoneware for many years, a friend gave it to me years ago for helping him move, today I brought it in from the front porch and cleaned it up. After I cleaned it I decided to check it out Online and see what it was and was surprised to find that people collected them, anyway I have two pictures of it and would appreciate it if you could tell me something about it.

Thank you,

Steve

Answer:

Steve, you have a very nice and clean Red Wing 3 gallon stoneware crock with the first Red Wing oval (called the ski oval).  The Red Wing Stoneware company used birch leaves for decorations before the produced the “red wing” in 1909.   Your 3 gallon Red Wing birch leave crock was produced between 1895 & 1909.  Value in perfect condition with the ski oval and great markings is around $100.  Al Kohlman

gallon white jug looks to be a Red Wing shoulder jug

Question:

Hello

Can you tell me more about these two items I have. The crock is about 8-9″ tall  and the Jug is about 10-12″ tall with no marking on it.

The crock has a USA mark on the bottom. Jeremy

Answer: Jeremy, your 1 gallon white jug looks to be a Red Wing shoulder jug.  With no decorations or advertising, the value is between $20 & $25.  The flower crock is from the Western Stoneware   Company.  With the crack and being Western the value is quite low.  Maybe $10.  Al Kohlman

3 gallon Red Wing birch leaf crock

Question:

I cannot find this crock on the website.  Please give me information on the value, year it was manufactured and some history.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jerry

Answer:

Jerry, you have a 3 gallon Red Wing birch leaf crock that was produced between 1895 & 1906.  It looks like this crock has a major glaze imperfection and would most likely have been a second when sold.  The value would be quite low with this imperfection.  Maybe $15 to $20 at best.  Al Kohlman

5 gallon St. Paul Book and Stationary Cooler, dome top salt glaze, and sponge band bowl.

Question:

HI,

I was curious of the value of these three pieces

5 Gallon Advertising St Paul book and Stationary Water cool, has one small crows foot in the back otherwise is fine. The lid had a few cracks

Red wing Dome top salt glaze with one chip

A spongeband bowl, does have a few cracks inside the bottom but the lid is perfect

Thanks again! Brett

Answer:

Brett, cracks in stoneware today is just killing the values.  Collector are being extremely picky when it comes to pieces for their personal collection.  Your advertising water cooler with small spider in the cooler and damaged lid would have a value in the area of $300 to $500.

Your salt glazed Dome top jug with the chip would have a value between $75 & $100 depending on the size of the chip.

An your gray line casserole with mint lid but cracked bottom $100 to $125 for the lid & $30 for the bottom.  I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but in today’s market, it is a tough sell on pieces that have damage.  Al Kohlman

Stoneware Canteen

Question:

Not sure if this is a Red Wing piece or not.  Katie said to send to the experts to see.  I have attached a picture of it.  Thanks much.  Calli

Answer:

Calli, from what I can see of your canteen, it looks to be Red Wing.  I have not seen this advertising before, but that does not mean it is not Red Wing.  The date on the bottom of the canteen fits the time frame as does the style of the handles and spout.  Would really need to see this in person to say for sure, but looks good in the photo.  Al Kohlman

15 gallon Red Wing back stamped salt glazed double leaf crock

Question:

Hello, I just saw the picture of a large crock with crack on this site.So I’m wondering if the 15 gallon salt glaze with impressed side mark and a nasty crack would be valued about the same. Its so heavy I can’t keep moving it and want to sell it. Thank you for your help in giving me a value to go by. Dot

Answer:

Dot, your Red Wing back stamped salt glazed double leaf crock does have a nasty crack.   The crack is large and stained.  Also the decoration on the front is very weak and not fully complete.  Put all of this together and your crock would have a value between $100 & $175.   Al Kohlman
