If this is Red Wing, can you tell me an approximate age and value?
Thank you,
Nancy
Answer:
Value of a 5 gallon North Star Company leaf churn in mint condition is between $350 & $400.
Hi, I just purchased this nice butter churn from a flea market in Pinetop Arizona. There are no chips or cracks that I can notice.
The man thought it was pretty old, and I just really loved it. I looked up the design on the pottery , and found that it was made in
Minnesota, but I thought all Redwing pottery at the “redwing” logo on it. Could you please date this piece for me, and tell me what
it is worth. Thank You
Vuctoria
Answer: Vuctoria, your Red Wing birch leaf butter churn was produced between 1895 & 1909. If both the churn and lid are in perfect condition the value is between $150 & $200. Al Kohlman
Hi, could you let me know if this is a Red Wing crock? And, if so, a value range given it is not in mint condition. There is some chipping of paint and a chip in the stoneware on the bottom edge.
Karla
Answer:
Karla, you do indeed have a Red Wing 5 gallon salt glazed leaf crock. The chipping on the bottom edge is very minor as well as the pitting in the Albany slip on the inside of the crock. Value is in the $300 to $325 range. Nice piece! Al Kohlman
Sir or Madam:
I have a 5 gallon Red Wing jug, and would like to know it’s value. Photo is attached. Copy on the jug says it is from the Music Hall Bath House in Excelsior Springs, MO. There are no cracks or crazing on the jug.
The bottom of the jug has the “Minnesota Stoneware Co. Red Wing, Minn” on the bottom. Thank you so much for your assistance. My contact information is below.
Thank you,
Gayle

HI,JUST WONDERING WHAT THIS JUG MIGHT BE WORTH. I WAS TOLD IT WAS RED WING,BUT DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS. IF IT IS, WOULD YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT ITS VALUE MIGHT BE. IT IS A 2 GALLON IN MINT CONDITION.ITS A WINNIPEG GINGER BEER JUG. THANK-YOU
WILLIAM IN MORDEN,MANITOBA.CANADA
Hi, William – Your jug is definitely RW and tends to bring around $250-$300 down here in the states. Sometimes I’ve seen them priced for more when dealers/collectors put them out for sale, but I rarely see them sell for any more than that. They might bring more up in your area…you’d know better that I on that.
Here’s a pic of my King’s Old Country cooler and jug. These are both 5 gallon pieces, however. I don’t know what the 2 gallon jug was designed to sit on top of, as I’ve only seen coolers in the 5 gallon size. They’re pretty rare.
Best,
Rick
My daughter bought this on an on line auction. She has asked me to try to find out some info about it. We would appreciate anything you could tell us. Dick & Jeanne. Thank You.
Answer: Dick & Jeanne, your daughter has purchased a Red Wing Stoneware 3 gallon zinc glazed beehive jug. This jug was produced between 1895 & 1917. With only the number 3 stenciled on the jug, the value is in the area of $150 to $175 or so. If it had further decorations such as leaves or a red wing, the value would be in the $300 range. Hope this helps some. Al Kohlman
Question: Hi Al, I recently saw this 3 gallon Ice Water cooler and I’m considering buying it for my collection. I haven’t really been able to find anything on it. Can you tell me the when it was produced and what you think the value would be? I’ve attached a photo for reference. It does have a crack in the bottom. Sincerely, Ted
Answer: Ted, this 3 gallon straight sided Red Wing Ice Water was produced by the Minnesota Stoneware Company sometime between 1895 & 1906 or so. With the crack in the bottom the value would be somewhere between $350 & $550 all depending on how severe the crack. Al Kohlman
Question:
Good Afternoon,
I have been reading the stoneware ask the experts section since I found it a few months ago. It has been so helpful! I have been very fortunate in my picking/estate sale/auction purchasing lately so I would like to ask Al Kohlman about a few items of my collection. Unfortunately, I have one piece that isn’t pictured and I cannot find any information about it. I will have it in my possession next weekend. It is a butter crock about the same size as the cottage cheese labeled one in the photos but I believe it is a Red Wing and it has the same font and color as the number 4 from Granger, WA. It had butter on it and was labeled (a full name but I only remember the last) Abrams from a city in Michigan.
As far as the information I would like I was hoping to confirm they are all Red Wing, when they were made, and if at all possible an approximate value. I will not be selling these as they are loved items in my collection.
The condition of each is as follows:
Land o Lakes Butter: no chips, crackers or glaze issues.
Cottage Cheese crock: slight hairline that looks as if it came from the production run, right at center above the label.
#2 Butter churn: No lid, no dasher. There is a minor chip just inside the rim to the right of the label if looking at it. Otherwise there are no condition issues.
#5 Birch leaf crock: no cracks but a minor chip just inside the rim to the right of the label if looking at it.
1 gallon Red Wing Jug: No noticeable condition issues. The cloth was around the cork when I purchased it so I kept it that way.
15 Red Wing Butterfly: It is stamped, there are no harlines or cracks of any kind. There is a slight glaze issue and as pictured to curious depressions that look like they could either be chips or depressions made when it was made.
4 WL Barker crock: I found an article from a convention where one was auctioned off many years ago. It was stated that it was a very rare Red Wing item that, at the time in 2003 (I think) sold for $2800.
I can provide additional pictures if you would like. I chose these to limit the size of the email I am sending.
Also, is there any literature you recommend regarding information on Red Wing crockery? I soak up all I can at every antique show and from what I can find on the internet.
Thank you so much for your help and information!
Brian
Answer:
Brian, both the butter & cottage cheese crocks are not Red Wing. No idea of their value.
#2 Butter churn: No lid, no dasher. There is a minor chip just inside the rim to the right of the label if looking at it. Otherwise there are no condition issues. $150 to $175
#5 Birch leaf crock: no cracks but a minor chip just inside the rim to the right of the label if looking at it. $70 to $80
1 gallon Red Wing Jug: No noticeable condition issues. The cloth was around the cork when I purchased it so I kept it that way. $175
15 Red Wing Butterfly: It is stamped, there are no harlines or cracks of any kind. There is a slight glaze issue and as pictured to curious depressions that look like they could either be chips or depressions made when it was made. Those depressions are chips. $2000 to $2300
4 WL Barker crock: I found an article from a convention where one was auctioned off many years ago. It was stated that it was a very rare Red Wing item that, at the time in 2003 (I think) sold for $2800. In 2003 the prices of Red Wing pieces were at their prime. Since the melt down of the economy in 2008 Red Wing values have dropped. However, you still have a nice piece here. Value today, $1500 to $2000. Hope this was helpful. Al Kohlman
